CHAPTER EIGHT
The Dangers of Pornography
At age eleven, Taylor went online to check out the baseball gloves at a sporting goods store. When he innocently typed the store’s name into his search engine, he didn’t find the store. Instead, he found Web site after Web site with pornographic photos of women. Taylor felt guilty and dirty. Still, he was drawn to the obscene photos, and over the next year and a half he spent time each day looking at pornographic images. His hunger for even grosser photos and stories grew, and before long he was addicted to the powerful images of pornography. His innocence was gone, and at age thirteen he was acting out some of the crude behaviors he saw on the Internet.
Taylor wasn’t a bad kid. He never meant to keep looking at the porn; he just couldn’t handle porn’s stranglehold, and the addiction took over his life. Fortunately for Taylor, his parents finally realized what was up, and together they sought the necessary help to reprogram his mind and life. Today, Taylor is free from his pornography addiction, but he has to work at it every day. He would tell you to never start down that slippery road that brought him so much confusion, shame, and heartache. It wasn’t worth it.
When it comes to the human body and sexuality, we are all curious. Frankly, curiosity is a normal and good thing. Curiosity about our bodies and sex is a part of the natural excitement that comes with the sexual awakening of puberty. That’s why books like this one are written. And yet, unchecked curiosity can easily lead people into the trap of pornography. One poor decision can turn a somewhat innocent kid toward a destructive obsession that can have lifelong negative consequences.
Guys are more prone to look at porn than girls, but in today’s world everyone is susceptible, and most everyone will view pornography, often accidentally stumbling upon it on the Internet.
Your Mind Takes a Picture
When you see a pornographic photo or movie, your mind takes a picture and stores it inside your brain for the rest of your life. The more pornography you see, the more photos stored in your mind— and don’t think for a moment it won’t affect your life.
I have been very fortunate to not view much porn, especially considering that I didn’t commit to the Purity Code until I was older. Even so, there are images in my mind. This may sound silly, but in eighth grade I saw a picture of a woman with her top off in National Geographic magazine, which, of course, is not a porn magazine. The picture is still in my mind.
If a person does not commit early to the Purity Code, I don’t know how possible it is today to refrain from viewing pornography. A few years ago I was speaking to thirty thousand students at an international youth conference in New Orleans. That night in the Superdome included an incredible time of worship, a well-known band, and literally the best laser light show I have ever seen.
